Zucchini's most recent acquisition, Elettromeccanica di Marnate (EdM) has its European headquarters at Teramo, Italy. Founded in 1958, EdM, originally manufactured oil-cooled transformers but have since concentrated its production operations upon the more environmentally-friendly cast resin transformers.

The production plant in Teramo employs the latest state of the art design and manufacturing technologies including computer aided electrical and mechanical design work for both standard and custom made transformers. EdM's casting system, which is one of the most advanced in the World, has been specifically adapted to EdM's production requirements. The whole resin casting process, from component dosing to the final polymerisation, is computer controlled thereby reducing any production variations. All EdM's transformers conform to the necessary IEC and CENELEC standards and undergo rigorous safety standard tests.

EdM's merger with the Zucchini Group in 1998 further strengthened its position within Europe.

EdM cast resin transformers are available in the UK from Zucchini Busbar UK Ltd.

Zucchini - EDM offers cast resin transformers to a maximum rating of 16 mVA with a voltage level of 36kV. The standard distribution range is between 160 - 3150kVA in 12kV, 17.5 & 24kV voltage class levels.

The low voltage windings used in EdM transformers are normally wound in aluminium foils as this tends to reduce most axial and radial stresses generated by possible short circuits. This also ensures the current density is distributed along it's whole length with even distribution of temperature, thus eliminating any existence of hot-spots.

Winding insulation between turns is obtained by using class F materials interleaved with the conductor, to form a compact cylinder. Each winding undergoes vacuum impregnation with epoxy resin, which improves the compactness, guaranteeing maximum protection against moisture and environmental pollution.

The high voltage windings are normally made of aluminium. The ideal compatibility between the expansion coefficient of the aluminium and of the resin used for the casting eliminates any risk of fissures or micro-cracks in the cast resin coils.

The automatic winding machines used at EdM to manufacture the high voltage windings make it possible to produce complete windings with aluminium foil, interleaved with double insulation, wound directly on one drum. The winding production process is constantly monitored by an automatic control system and is supervised by qualified engineering staff.

The magnetic core is made from cold-rolled silicon steel sheets with orientated grains and insulated on both sides by a thin coating of in-organic material. The leg and yoke sections are made of steel strips and composed of various steps and sizes in order to optimise the stacking factor.

Compression of the yokes is achieved by means of suitably sized hot dipped galvanised steel plates linked by steel tie rods.

The careful choice of the most suitable materials and flux density values combined with the special construction methods adopted by EdM guarantees the magnetic core has low-load currents, reduced vibration, low losses and low noise levels.

All EdM cast resin transformers undergo strict working and safety tests according to IEC 726 standards. EdM also has attained E2-C2-F1 certification enabling it to offer a fully-tested comprehensive range of products.
